Candeloro - My Hero
I am a fan of Figure Skating. Every year I watch as much as I possibly can, but especially Nationals, Worlds and Olympics. I also see two live shows every year, Stars on Ice and Champions on Ice (rip - looks like this one has gone out of business). In 2003, I got a call from my sister. She had won 4 tickets at a charity auction for Champions on Ice in Sacramento with backstage passes! I was still living in Los Angeles at the time and already had tickets for the show down there, but I was not about to pass up this opportunity! I flew up to Sacramento, had dinner with my sister, brother-in-law Scott and nephew Nick and then we went to the show. I remember that they were throwing little stuffed Chevy cars into the audience and my nephew caught one! It was a great show and afterwards we proudly took our passes and met to be taken backstage. We headed up the ramp leading outside to the skater's bus and took our positions along the rail. Had we known then what we know know, we wouldn't have gone so far up the ramp because the skaters start at the bottom of the ramp and by the time they get to the end of the ramp, they are being hustled out and onto the bus. We were armed with programs and sharpies. Most of the skaters were very nice and stopped and gave autographs. A few of the less well known skaters (in the US anyway) kind of hustled past us and one who was pregnant did the same. But most stopped, said hi and signed our programs and my nephew's stuffed car. Michelle Kwan was particularly nice and when my sister asked her, she let my brother-in-law take her picture with us. Very cool! But the very nicest skater was Philippe Candeloro of France. Philippe was the winner of the bronze medal at both the 1994 and 1998 Olympics. He's probably most famous for a couple of crowd engaging moves that he does, crowd pleasing programs and taking off his shirt in exhibitions! Philippe was one of the very last skaters to come up the ramp, partly because he stopped and signed for every single person who was there. By the time he got to us, the show organizers were hollering that it was time for the skaters to go and get on the bus. And most of them did. A few signed a couple more autographs, apologized and left. A few others just left. Philippe stayed and signed an autograph for every single person who was still waiting. Good for him! My hero! |
