Your Medical Treatment - Question Everything
If you are suffering from chronic medical problems, especially from conditions that aren't well understood, such as Fibromyalgia, Psoriasis, MS, Arthritis, or any medical condition, it is important to take charge of your own medical care. For too many years, Doctors have been regarded as experts and authority figures, not to be questioned. After all, they went to medical school for many years to learn all this complicated, technical, scientific information, right? Well true, doctors have a lot of education and an experienced doctor has a lot of knowledge about treating different conditions. But we forget that doctors are human. They make mistakes. They mistake one similar condition for another that they are more familiar with. They allow the patient's attitude to influence their choices. Also, Medical doctors aren't the only kind of practitioners out there. There are Naturopaths, who are trained to look for the causes of medical problems and treat them with natural remedies. There are Chiropractors, who do spinal manipulation. And many, many more. The sad thing is that the medical hierarchy in the US does not encourage these different disciplines to learn about each other and work together. Also, most health plans do not offer much in the way of coverage for alternative treatments. This is not to say that alternative therapies are always better than traditional ones or vice versa, only that there are options that you may not be aware of if you only talk to one type of practitioner. Always ask questions. Speak up if something isn't working for you. Check into alternatives. It's your life and your health! |
